The Health & Wellness Committee is responsible for developing, implementing, monitoring, and reviewing the district’s menus, nutrition, and physical activity policies. The committee meets five times a year and welcomes all community and staff members. Its mission is to promote healthy behavior in schools by encouraging students to consume fresh fruits, vegetables, low-fat milk, and whole grains. The committee also encourages students to select and consume all components of the school meal.
The reasons for the wellness policy are as follows:
- Children need access to healthful foods and opportunities to be physically active to grow, learn, and thrive.
- Good health fosters student attendance and education.
- Obesity rates have doubled in children and tripled in adolescents over the last two decades.
- Physical inactivity and excessive calorie intake are the predominant causes of obesity.
- Heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes are responsible for two-thirds of deaths in the United States.
- Unhealthy eating habits, physical inactivity, and obesity often are established in childhood.
Students, staff, parents, and community partners can join the Wellness Committee. Please email [email protected] if you are interested in joining the Wellness Committee or would like additional information.
